Update: New contracts for NFL’s elite

In the NFL typically you see contracts handed out around this time to a few different types of people, one of those are the players who are holding out in hopes of bigger contracts… Chris Johnson. Second is of course free agents lastly the other is franchise players much like the Chad Greenway deal which was signed on Monday. But at this point you don’t often see contract extensions to players who are under contract and going about the business the right way, this isn’t to say it isn’t deserved or anything along those lines but with just a few days before the regular season typically teams have other things on their agendas so when in a matter of 2 days, 2 players who are I’d say inside the top 3 at each position are signed to record setting deals its pretty neat. Both are model players on and off the field and these new contracts reward them for being such.

It looks as if the Vikings are looking to really lock up their talent. First it was Chad Greenway the franchise player from 2011. And now Adrian Peterson the franchise player. 7 years $100 million with $36 million guaranteed. The deal pending Peterson finishes out the deal which is quite unlikely will pretty much finish up all days, days as a professional bringing him to the age of 33 but he will make enough dough in that span 14.3 mil per year to retire a happy camper. Although Peterson has been pretty rock solid over the years I have a hard time with handing running backs this kind of money.

Well the Steelers wont have to worry about losing their defensive player of the year Troy Polamalu, as he signed a 3 year 36 million dollar extension unlike the Peterson deal I love this deal  Troy is 30 years old and it is a record-setting deal for safety’s so I can see where some might be hesitant, but its hard to argue with the deal when Troy is one of the most dynamite defensive playmakers in the NFL. Troy and his Steelers go head to head with division rival Ravens this Sunday at 1pm eastern time you can check out my predictions for week 1 by clicking here

Update: Mesoraco

I forgot to mention in the round up about Devin Mesoraco being called up with rosters expanding he’s been struggling a bit this month. He won’t see to much to much playing time with the Reds catching situation pretty well settled, but maybe get a spot start a week or so to get a taste of major league life. Congratulations to the 4 futurestar to graduate to the majors.

Updates: Gibson & Johnson, Taylor

So with just saw an update on Kyle Gibson it looks like he will indeed require Tommy John surgery. The news doesn’t come as too much of a shock but it is disappointing. Gibson will now be out until 2013 season.

But the big news today is the end of a holdout, Chris Johnson got the elite money that he wanted, when he received a 5 million dollar 4 year extension included in the new deal is 30 million guaranteed. This is an example of yet another team that this week overpaid for an important player of course other being Michael Vick. Running backs typically have a short life span in the NFL, even though he is a dynamic player I don’t expect will see another year in which he runs for 2,000 yards again, Johnson had 1364 last season. Although he is 3 years younger than Frank Gore, and hasn’t shown quite as many signs of slowing down the 49ers did much better then the desperate Titians.

The last bit of news for today is that Fred Taylor has decided to hang them up, and call it a career. Taylor was one of the unappreciated players in the NFL, only going to 1 Pro Bowl.

Zack Wheeler traded

As I’m sure most everyone has heard by now Carlos Beltran has been traded to the Giants a good fit he wanted to stay in the national league, the Giants need a legit bat, that was the case even before their star catcher Buster Posey’s year ended injury which happened earlier this year and even more following it. The Mets needed someone to help rebuild this team long term as their farm system is pretty weak. They got the value they needed in Zack Wheeler one of of the futurestarz I’ve covered will now call the big apple his home. The Mets now have 2 strong pitching prospects in their ranks maybe not a whole lot else that impresses people but this was certainly a good deal for both teams. Me personally I say unless Beltran helps the Giants get back to the world series or they re-sign him that the Mets won this deal. They will pay a portion of his remaining salary but it was reported they would eat it all in order to get a high prospect, well they got the prospect and save couple million dollars.
Wheeler currently sports a 3.99 era in high a ball. He also is striking out little over a batter an inning and has dropped his walks per 9 down a full walk if he continues to improve him and Matt Harvey will be a solid start to rebuilding the Mets into a legitimate contender.

Mike Trout Promoted

The 2nd future star to graduate to the major leagues is the 19 year old out of New Jersey. Its well deserved too Mike has been mashing double a ball so if it wasn’t to the majors a solid argument could be made for a promotion to triple a. Trout was hitting 330 with 9 home runs and stole 28 bases for the Travelers.

The move comes in large part because of the injury to Peter Bourjos who strained his hamstring. That part makes me curious how long he will stay up although I don’t see any strategic value in calling up the highly touted prospect if not going to give him every chance to stay up even once Bourjos returns. I expect Trout to struggle a bit at least to match the hype that surrounds him there’s a reason you don’t see many players as young as him in the big leagues, if he’s up for a extended period of time I’d say 270-280 average maybe few home runs and some electric base running if he’s able to get on base at a steady clip. Look for Trout in tonight’s game vs the Mariners if I had to guess I’d say the rookie gets his first and only hit and steal of his major league career tonight.

I’ll definitely have a round up come late tonight once all games have finished.

Lonnie Chisenhall promoted

As you can guess from the title Chisenall has been promoted to the big league club and I think most Indian fans are saying its about time especially after the embarrassing offensive output they had in this weekends series against the Giants. Sounds like he will make his debut tonight vs the D-Backs who send Ian Kennedy to the mound.

Around the minors

First up is Jupiter’s unlucky winless pitcher Chad James hes not 0-9 despite pitching pretty well today the Hammerheads gave him absolutely no help here’s a recap of the pitchers outing.

James did a pretty good job today he struck out 7 walked none he got unlucky with some errors, and some mishandling of balls by the catcher. James wasn’t perfect by any means he did surrender 10 hits but minimized damage by constantly getting the outs when he needed to. Chad seems pretty athletic on the mound he fielder 2 hits right at him beautifully his off speed stuff was pretty good. When he missed he did miss high which is something he needs to refine as he moves through the system as more advanced hitters will likely crush those types of pitches.  Chad went 8 innings I thought he probably should have been pulled after the 7th but he was riding high at that point retiring 7 straight in the 8th he loaded the bases with no outs then pitched out of the jam inducing a double play then struck out the final batter he faced.

The other game I listened to today was the Louisville Bats one of the best hitting teams in the minors, and one of those reasons is the one of the FutureStarz Devin Mesoraco he went 3-4 on the day with the highlight being a 2 out high hard hit ball that was misplayed by left fielder Michael Aubrey which netted the highly touted prospect a double and 2 rbi. His next 2 hits were singles lined to left as well he ended up scoring in the bottom of the 5th on a Daniel Dorn home run. He lined out in his last ab on which most times would probably be a hit but a nice play by 2nd basemen lead to a double play. I was switching back and forth on feeds so did not get to hear about how Mesoraco handled behind the plate however he did catch Tug Hulett stealing in top of the 6th and went without a blemish on the day. Devin now has hit safely in the last 7 games hes played in.

Jean Segura is currently on the 7 day dl again for hamstring strain.

I will be trying to listen to games when I can to give my readers a better review.

Zack Cox went 1 for 4 with a 2 run shot in today’s game and struck out once on a 6 pitch ab in the 7th inning in the 8-9 losing effort to the San Antonio Misisons.

Mike Trout had a hit in the 3rd inning and stole 2nd then walked in the 6th and ended up scoring facing Arcenio Leon who struggled with controlling his pitches early in the inning who had 8 of his first 9 pitches go for balls. Mike had hits in the 7th and 8th leading the Travelers back he knocked in the game tying run. Trout for the day went 3/4 all singles, a walk, a steal,  2 runs and knocked in that one rbi. Mike is looking like the real deal which I must admit I was a little curious if he would continue to be the prospect everyone thought so highly of.

I didn’t get much in terms of the Gwinnett Braves game which featured Julio Teheran taking the mound today he didn’t have it today though when I did get to hear it seemed he had no problem getting into favorable pitchers counts then gave the hitters to good of a pitch to hit. This lead to the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs jumping out front early and never looking back winning this one with ease 12-2. Teheran’s line for the night 6ip 5er 9hits 2bb 3ks.

Around the minors

After back to back rough starts Zack Wheeler redeemed himself having his best outing of his young career giving up 3 hits and only 1 free pass and struck out 12 in 7 innings vs the Stockton Ports.

Zack Cox continues to impress yesterday he went 2/4 the other 2 abs he did strike out but is still sporting a nice 5:6 bb:k route in sense advancing to Springfield.

For those of you who have read my recent article over at sportsinsanity you know I recently covered Kyle Gibson. He took the hill last night as well pitching a strong 7 & 2/3rds innings for the win he only gave up 3 hits walked one and ked up 10.

Around the minors

As I wrote yesterday Zack Cox was promoted to AA to play for the Springfield Cardinals. In his AA debt the youngster went 2/3 both singles he also drew a walk and struck once in the 7th but by then the game was well in hand 12 – 4 at the time the visiting Hook went on two score 2 more runs for a 12 – 6 final. As I’ve mentioned previously I’d like to see him cut those K’s a comparison to the under appreciated Placido Polanco might not be to far off.
